The state will send an Asian-American to the Miss USA pageant next year.
Nitaya Panemalaythong, 26, of Savage was crowned Miss Minnesota last month. The office worker and Normandale College student is the first Asian-American to win the honors, according to pageant producers.
Panemalaythong, whose family is from Laos, was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. In 1986, she moved to the United States as an infant. Her family lived in Minneapolis and North Carolina.
Her bio says her proudest achievement was buying a house last year. Why?
"She and her brother in law support 10 family members, living in that home," the bio says.
Panemalaythong was at first skeptical about entering the pageant, and at 26, she was the oldest contestant in the competition, the Savage Pacer reports.

Une Lao-Américaine devient Miss Minnesota
Son nom est Nitaya Panemalaythong, elle a 26 ans et c'est la nouvelle Miss Minnesota. Elle est la plus âgée des participantes.
Elle participera l'année prochaine à l'élection de Miss USA.
Nitaya Panemalaythong est née dans un camp de réfugiés en Thailande et arrive aux Etats-Unis lorsqu'elle était encore nourrisson en 1986.

Je suis content pour elle et pour sa famille.
Le Laos est fier d'elle et nous prouve que le peuple laotien peut concurrencer avec les autres pays dans tous les domaines.

Félicitations pour ses parents qui a une fille si adorable. Très fier pour sa famille ... Mais arrêtons de croire que les Dirigeants actuels du Laos soient fier d'elle. Ces usurpateurs à Vientiane considèrent encore que les Laotiens qui vivent et qui travaillent à l'étranger sont encore des étrangers au Laos, dans leur pays, dans la terre de leur ancêtres.
